Piiiiisa!

Another early morning on Wednesday brought us to the Girona airport and aboard a plane to Pisa, Italy. The Spanish leg of our trip behind us, we were ready to move on to some exciting Italian adventures.

The Girona airport quite possibly has one of the most fantastic views of any airport I've ever been to!

After settling into our room, we bee-lined to the tourist info spot to figure out how we could rent bikes in the city. We paid a measly 5 euro each to have a one day access to the public bikes, which are stationed strategically around the historic center.

A small stroll later and we were ready to hop up on our bikes in search of some history. We had been biking around for only a short amount of time when we turned a corner through an archway that opened right up to a gorgeous piazza that just so happened to contain the Leaning Tower of Pisa itself!

We docked our bikes to explore for a bit and took our obligatory goofy tower photos.

We decided it was best to wander away from that area to find some lunch and settled into a delectable ristorante sitting on a university campus nearby.

The meal was delicious and we all agreed we were just in heaven. We wandered further away to find some highly recommended gelato, filled to the brim with whole hazelnuts. Molto bene!

We made our way back to the Piazza de Miracoli to for our time slot to explore the Duomo di Pisa for which the Leaning Tower is the bell tower. It's a long rectangular cathedral with larger than life ceilings.

We took back to our bikes after a short snooze on the lawn of the duomo, deciding to bike through Piazza dei Cavalieri and along the river. We stopped to check out Chiesa di Santa Maria della Spina, a small church sitting on the bank of the river looking extremely out of place.

We caught a beautiful setting sun over the Arno River before biking on through the outskirts of the city, catching gorgeous mountain views as we whizzed down the roads.

When we finally got off our bikes 2 hours later, we were ready to take it easy for the rest of the night. The kind receptionist at our hotel gave us 2 recommendations for dinner, one being a small ristorante with delicious and authentic Italian food, and another a highly recommended pizzeria. We opted for the ristorante and were greeted by a sweet old Italian woman who spoke very little English.

After feasting on various perfectly cooked fish and pasta plates, we decided to wander around the city center and visit the Torre pendente once more before getting to bed for our early train in the AM.
